Justin Finch-Fletchley?!?!

Post by C is for »

Not important enough to submit a comment, but I can't just let Genuine's misspeak pass without noting it.

Justin Finch-Fletchley was down for Eton, which was the only bragging he ever did.

I'm sure even he wanted to stuff Ernie Macmillan into a broom closet when he wouldn't shut up about his study habits. He got 7, 8 hours on a good night. It was Ernie who drove people crazy. Which is why, if you're curious, Dumbledore could never have made him Head Boy. He almost certainly would've chosen Harry. (okay, that's just my own personal canon. but I'm stickin with it.)

Okay, if someone wants to comment on the actual question/response, they can do that too. It's about how being a temple worker isn't more extra righteous really. Or something.

Oops. I get those Hufflepuffs confused sometimes.
I've had it fixed, and I apologize for the brain fart.

My only comment on the actual question is that I interpreted the "pearls before swine" comment to mean that he didn't want to come off as though he was on "some holier than thou" trip. It didn't seem like he thought that way himself, but just wanted to make sure others didn't see it that way. But he didn't word it well, so I can see why GA responded the way she did.

Though honestly, I don't see why this guy should go out of his way to hide how often he goes to the temple. Bringing it up in conversation all the time is one thing, and obviously he isn't doing that, but I don't see why he should hide it at all. I used to go weekly and do baptisms back when I was a single gal with a weekly break in my schedule at BYU. If people question it, you just say that you feel really lucky you have enough time in your schedule to do that right now - as though you assume they would do the same if they could. If it ever came up in conversation, I just said I felt blessed that I could, and highly recommend how much it has done for me. But in the family ward I am in now it isn't even a big deal. I know a lot of people who go weekly and/or are temple workers, and it is a big part of their daily life, so it comes up often. And that's great.

But yeah . . . purposefully making yourself seem worse in front of other people so you don't come off as a righteous person is a bad plan. I hope he keeps working on that. Or gets better friends that aren't impressed when he tells an off color joke.

Before my ride's car broke down I would try to go to the temple every week. I didn't even think anything of it, until one day my ride asked if I would be needing to leave early to go to the temple the next day. I don't know why I didn't think that he would notice I was going weekly, but it made me realize that people not only don't think you're more righteous for going, but people will support you in your goals and righteous desires.

Uh, no problem. :) It's not important. It's just that Justin Finch-Fletchley was my fictional boyfriend for a while so I had to make sure he wasn't being accused of annoying habits he didn't have. ;)

This.

Also, I dated a guy that worked at the temple every Saturday. He probably still does. Anyway, it didn't make a difference to me that he did that, except we tried not to stay out too late on Fridays and that I avoided the temple on Saturdays for several months in case I ran into him. But if I found that out after hearing him engage in behavior I didn't find appealing (like swearing, or telling inappropriate jokes) I would've been confused. Which guy is the real guy?

Although I can't say for sure that'd be my reaction, having never had that happen. Maybe I'd take it all in stride. Point being: working at the temple, no big deal. Acting less goody-two-shoes to offset your extra righteousness from going to the temple so often: a slightly bigger deal. Just to me!

Thanks for clearing up that you edited the actual question. I read it after the edit and C4 really confused me with this thread. A lot. Because it looked right to me! :D

Heh, this thread confused me until I had read far enough to catch on that it was in reference to Harry Potter. Man; y'all's esoterism can be extreme. Just saying.
He who knows others is clever;
He who knows himself has discernment.
He who overcomes others has force;
He who overcomes himself is strong. 33:1-4

Had you read the link at the very beginning, it would have helped. :) Also, it's only half Harry Potter and half holier-than-thou attitudes, specifically in regards to temple work.
