Bob Jones University

Re: 68738, interesting about Bob Jones University:
Wikipedia wrote:The BJU science department, which supports young-earth creationism, offers majors in biology, chemistry, and physics and also offers courses in astronomy. In 2008 no member of the BJU science faculty held a degree in geology, and the university offered only one introductory course in the subject.
I would love to sit in and hear that introductory geology course.

Kevin Roose's book The Unlikely Disciple: A Sinner's Semester at America's Holiest University is about Liberty University, not Bob Jones University, but he talks a bit about what they learned in their "science" classes and it sounds like the curriculum was similar. (And I recommend the book, overall, especially to BYU students, because the contrasts are really interesting.)

I'm also curious what a college biology course that discounts evolution would look like (I assume they discount it, as not much speciation could occur in ~6k years).
"Professor, why do whales have finger bones?" :)
Interesting book. I just read a few pages on Amazon (unfortunately, didn't find any with his accounts of their "science" classes).

"Physical Contact
On and off campus, physical contact between men and women students is not allowed."

Really? They can't touch...at all?

There is so much about this handbook that makes me grateful for agency. And jeans. (I don't even like jeans.)

Collegeprowler.com has a ranking for "college strictness," and there are actually loads of schools more strict than BYU, with its C+. BJU got a D+. The most strict is West Point.

Or be alone one-on-one, or be in public together in equal numbers (i.e. there always must be more men than women or vice versa).

So how do students there even _get_ engaged?

It sounds to me like they're a University promoting homosexuality while masquerading as a Church school.

How does this work if students are related? Like, I wouldn't be allowed to hug my brother? What if my dad went back to school at the same time I was in school? I couldn't hug my dad?

My favorite part is how they make girls drop out of school for getting married under age 21. We'd lose like half the student body if that were a rule here!

No country, jazz, rock, or rap.
No headphones unless for an educational purpose.
No video games above E10.
No television unless you live off campus. Then you can watch TV-PG.
No dancing. Period.
No movies allowed on campus. G rated movies allowed off campus.
PG movies allowed if viewed with a faculty member in their home and "the objectionable content is discussed." No movies at theaters if you are signed up for classes that semester (including breaks.)

My two and three year old children break every one of these rules.

What objectionable content are they finding in a PG movie?

And also, I wonder if they have nude or bikini models.

NerdGirl, I would have to hunt you down and... I'll leave it at that.

I'm with Nerdgirl on that too, so you'll have to get to both of us.

Also, my husband and I were laughing at how strict the rules are, but then we started comparing it to the Missionary Handbook in our heads. They see themselves as representatives of Christ, and hence have strict rules, just like our Missionaries. While it is a little crazy to pull them from a Mission to College life and expect everyone to remain sane, Mission rules are in some cases even more strict than those rules.

Still, I can't stop laughing at the "no physical contact" thing, no matter how hard I try. Uh oh! He gave her a high five! Time to report them to the HCO!

You'll have to get me too... which is actually a legitimate prospect considering we have to see each other sometimes.
