Not a direct response to the question, but it brought some things to mind.

The hypothetical situation made me think of the Russian film The Cuckoo, where three characters are stranded together in remote Finland and they each speak three different languages for the duration of the film.

I also thought of the movie Walkabout, where a girl and her brother need to communicate with an aboriginal tribesman in the outback of Australia.

There are lots of other movies that depict communication despite language barriers. Dances with Wolves is probably the most famous example I can think of. What are some others?

The Three Amigos has quite a few, although done in a comical way.

I particularly like when discussing the Spanish word "nada" the character asks, "isn't that a light chicken gravy?"

This reminds me of Quest for Fire, which I saw when I was much too young. I remember it just being a lot of grunting and very boring. I think I'd probably like it now, though.

I had never heard of that movie before, but just watched it. Pretty good. Ron Perlman was a perfect casting choice because he already has kind of a caveman face.
