Correcting People's Spelling and Grammar

Post by C is for »

I've done a pretty good job lately (except for, well, already this morning -- sorry Dead Cat, it was funny) of not correcting people. But I can't just totally ignore it. My soul dies a little bit but I've learned to just let it die.

I started pulling out my hair during Rating Pending's response. But I wasn't going to say anything! I'm almost as annoyed at people correcting typos or poor grammar as the original typo-makers. Unless it's a really funny typo, like people making statuses on Facebook mobile and getting the totally wrong word. Which isn't even spelling and grammar really.

So, person that wrote in...just pull out your hair, spasm, contort your face, and you'll be okay. And offer to proofread.

I'm glad you found it funny--that was the intention. I also get annoyed with bad spelling/grammar. My reply in Free Association was due to the fact that my brain felt there was something wrong with the word "cancellation," but a quick search yielded that it was indeed correct. I was going to misspell "mispell" even worse than I did, but I decided to be more subtle in the end.

I can't help but point out spelling errors as well. I'd point out grammar errors, but frankly I'm terrible with grammar to begin with.

However, one thing I absolutely cannot abide is CAPS LOCK SHOUTING. Holy crap does that drive me up the wall.

That reminded me of this classic joke, taken from an IRC conversation (slightly edited for profanity):
<Khassaki> HI EVERYBODY!!!!!!!!!!
<Judge-Mental> try pressing the the Caps Lock key
<Khassaki> O THANKS!!! ITS SO MUCH EASIER TO WRITE NOW!!!!!!!
<Judge-Mental> [facepalm]
