Yeah, the Peanut Gallery did seem a bit offended by it (or at least it comes across that way), but I think it was a pretty interesting comment. And in my own completely non-scientific appraisal of the situation, it does seem like it's more common in Utah.

Thanks for answering my question, NerdGirl. The Peanut Gallery didn't last long, and I wondered if I had been partly responsible for that.

It took a fair amount of work to prepare the comment.

My mom's family were very much Utah-culture Mormons, so my mom uses her maiden name as her middle name on all official correspondence. I doubt she was planning on giving her daughters middle names, and maybe if my dad's last name had been a little less cumbersome and a little more anglican she would have followed through on her plan. As it is, we all have middle names and are quite fond of them. I feel little attachment to my last name and will gladly dump it if/when I get married.

A friend's family gives all of the sons the mother's maiden name as their middle name, and the daughters have no middle name. But when anyone got in trouble, they tend to get 'middle-named' with the maiden name whether it was their legal name or not. If my friend ever had the occasion to scold me, she would add in her mother's maiden name as if it were my middle name. I found it endearing.

Ug. After 2 months of avoiding the Reader Response forum, I have been sucked back in. (But not because of this thread.)

Oh, because I don't really read the board at all anymore, so I was just skimming all the threads in this forum anyway. Which seemed like a big waste of time and I decided I would just stick to the random threads. But I came to read the responses to Sauron's mosque post and I just started combing through other threads too.

I don't read the board at all anymore either. Except Gumby's responses. Those I save and treasure always.

I have one middle name. Everyone in my family has one middle name. When I get married I will proudly remove my surname and toss it in the rubbish bin and apply my husband's surname. I don't really like my last name all that much anyway.

I read the Board daily for five years, and read a huge chunk of the archives. About 80% of my friends and social experiences at college stemmed from the Board. I love and appreciate it. But I really needed to take a break. It happens to the best of us.
