In the session this morning, Elder Claudio Costa of the Presidency of the Seventy so eloquently instructed us on these 14 fundamentals. Because they are of such great importance to our very salvation, I will repeat them again.

What was President Kimball's issue with them?

I will quote from his biography directly: "In February 1980, Elder [Ezra Taft] Benson gave a talk at BYU titled "Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet" that emphasized the precedence of living prophet's statements over those of earlier prophets. ... Spencer felt concern about the talk, wanting to protect the church against being misunderstood as espousing ultraconservative politics or an unthinking "follow the leader" mentality. The First Presidency called Elder Benson in to discuss what he had said and asked him to make explanation to the full Quorum of the Twelve [Apostles] and other general authorities. Elder Benson told them that he meant only to "underscore President Kimball's prophetic call."" (Working Draft available on CD included with the book itself, in chapter 16).

It was really surprising they were brought up in the last conference, especially because it seems as if the First Presidency disallowed the talk to the Brethren shortly thereafter.

My guess is that the people who cited them in conference weren't aware of the disavowal. We're not always as aware of Church history* as we should be.

*The stuff that isn't taught in Sunday School or Seminary, I mean.

I wanted to point out that many people, including President Kimball, did not consider it doctrine, but then it was quoted in conference and... there goes another group of students who don't know the full story.

And those who do know the full story are apostate. I'm learning the hard way to just keep my mouth shut unless I'm with people I know get how the Church really works. And I want to say "it doesn't make the Brethren any less inspired! Just less magical!" I think that the follow-the-leader, blindly obedient mentality President Kimball was worried about is indeed coming to pass which worries me.

Craig, it has been my experience that those who want to blindly follow, will, regardless of any evidence in support or in repudiation of it.

The same holds true of those who don't want to blindly follow.

Craig, which biography is this from? The one called Spencer W. Kimball or the sequel called Lengthen Your Stride?
