Didn't those make it into Conference twice last time?

Yeah, they did.

Twice? Who was the second person?Dragon Lady wrote:Didn't those make it into Conference twice last time?
Re: Nine for Random Chatter, doomed to die
My notes seem to suggest Elder Costa and Elder Duncan. I should look them up to be sure.
Edit: Yep.

I tried to teach six 8-year-old girls how to make friendship bracelets today. At the same time.
Ugh.
My head hurts.

Re: Nine for Random Chatter, doomed to die
I will quote from his biography directly: "In February 1980, Elder [Ezra Taft] Benson gave a talk at BYU titled "Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet" that emphasized the precedence of living prophet's statements over those of earlier prophets. ... Spencer felt concern about the talk, wanting to protect the church against being misunderstood as espousing ultraconservative politics or an unthinking "follow the leader" mentality. The First Presidency called Elder Benson in to discuss what he had said and asked him to make explanation to the full Quorum of the Twelve [Apostles] and other general authorities. Elder Benson told them that he meant only to "underscore President Kimball's prophetic call."" (Working Draft available on CD included with the book itself, in chapter 16).Defy V wrote:What was President Kimball's issue with them?
It was really surprising they were brought up in the last conference, especially because it seems as if the First Presidency disallowed the talk to the Brethren shortly thereafter.

I know it exists as one of BYU's "Speeches of the Year."

Or other material/situations allieveated the concerns over the potential misunderstandings concerning espousing ultraconservative politics or an unthinking "follow the leader" mentality.Craig Jessop wrote: It was really surprising they were brought up in the last conference, especially because it seems as if the First Presidency disallowed the talk to the Brethren shortly thereafter.
That would seem to make the most sense to me.

Last night I dreamed that I hung out with Stargirl for a whole movie and didn't realize it was her, until Foreman was leaving, then I didn't figure out it was Foreman until later (I called him the wrong name and he looked at me like I was idiotic).
In my defense, Stargirl was blonde.

On a whim I e-mailed a lady inquiring about an internship teaching English over Skype to students in Taiwan...
Then she e-mailed me back and asked if I would like to sub for a class TOMORROW. Surprise! (I said yes, after all, I'm interested in the job, although I have very minimal teaching experience.)

I'm home from my mission and shell-shocked. It is so weird to not answer the phone like a missionary!

Welcome back!
Re: Nine for Random Chatter, doomed to die
My guess is that the people who cited them in conference weren't aware of the disavowal. We're not always as aware of Church history* as we should be.Craig Jessop wrote:It was really surprising they were brought up in the last conference, especially because it seems as if the First Presidency disallowed the talk to the Brethren shortly thereafter.

Hey welcome back Quiet Lamb! You left right as I was starting to lurk, so we never met. All you need to know is that I'm top dog and you better not cross me.
How'd it go? (How will it go?) That sounds like a really interesting experience. I'm trying to think of who I know that did that...let's blame the memory potion because I can't remember!!mic0 wrote:On a whim I e-mailed a lady inquiring about an internship teaching English over Skype to students in Taiwan...

Re: Nine for Random Chatter, doomed to die
She e-mailed me back this morning and said they don't need a sub anymore tomorrow. I guess that's the problem with subbing! But she said we could talk about me being a permanent sub for a while, which would be pretty exciting.
Also, on the "Fourteen Fundamentals" topic - I was reeeeally surprised when we studied that talk in depth in my Teachings of the Living Prophets class. I wanted to point out that many people, including President Kimball, did not consider it doctrine, but then it was quoted in conference and... there goes another group of students who don't know the full story.

Re: Nine for Random Chatter, doomed to die
And those who do know the full story are apostate. I'm learning the hard way to just keep my mouth shut unless I'm with people I know get how the Church really works. And I want to say "it doesn't make the Brethren any less inspired! Just less magical!" I think that the follow-the-leader, blindly obedient mentality President Kimball was worried about is indeed coming to pass which worries me.mic0 wrote:Also, on the "Fourteen Fundamentals" topic - I was reeeeally surprised when we studied that talk in depth in my Teachings of the Living Prophets class. Re: Nine for Random Chatter, doomed to die
Craig, it has been my experience that those who want to blindly follow, will, regardless of any evidence in support or in repudiation of it.
The same holds true of those who don't want to blindly follow.

Craig, which biography is this from? The one called Spencer W. Kimball or the sequel called Lengthen Your Stride?Craig Jessop wrote:I will quote from his biography directly: "In February 1980, Elder [Ezra Taft] Benson gave a talk at BYU titled "Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet" that emphasized the precedence of living prophet's statements over those of earlier prophets. ...
